The Plan Tucson 2050 Sustainability Challenge, part of a joint Landscape Architecture and Architecture Studio, aimed to develop a plan for the City of Tucson to be completely sustainable by the year 2050. The plan was projected from calculations and models were created for the development of a sustainable city by 2050. Energy, waste, water, alternative transportation and other variables were established into a comprehensive plan for the clients of the City of Tucson. I taught undergrad architecture students GIS through series of lectures and led the data collection team throughout the project which resulted in a published book. The data set is the largest and most comprehensive of the Tucson area. Graduate Assistancship position under Dr. Chris Nelson continued the development of the data set to include LEHD Data, Census Data, Land Value, Property Value, etc. Each building within the downtown area was hand digitized and matched with corresponding data from the above data sets. Over 10 million records were matched with the corresponding building and parcel data.

Using the data set and information learned for the area. Master planning for the downtown area was completed to introduce more parks and open spaces into the downtown Tucson region. Creating mixed-use and mixed-income areas were a key focus of the project, which can be viewed below.

After the semester several papers and publications resulted from the data set created as a result of my GA position. The project also won the Presidents’ Award: for Educational and Environmental Collaboration and Excellence presented at the Association for Environmental Studies and Sciences conference.
