Graphic design skills include info-graphic and logo development used by local companies and non-profits. Masters in Landscape Architecture has allowed for production of several award winning projects and several physical builds including a wetland boardwalk design in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Scientist

Years of research experience in the fields of biology, freshwater ecology, entomology, and environmental science. Positions held include: Algae Research Technician, Aquatic Macro-invertebrate Research Assistant, Environmental Engineering Intern, Aquaculture and Hydroponic Specialist, Assistant Naturalist, and Education Outreach Project Coordinator.

Photographer

Experienced in the art of nature and event photography. Served for several years as a school photographer and freelance photographer with many hours of practice covering sporting events, weddings, charity events, and school outings. Nature and automotive photography is a personal passion and interest. See photography examples below.

Commercial, Residential, and Park Design

Independent Contract work has been completed throughout the United States for design firms of varying size. Master planning, neighborhood/planned community development, park development, residential yards, and habitat design are just some skills that incorporate my training as a biologist/environmental scientist with architecture and engineering.

GIS Planning

GIS technician that has used ESRI ArcGIS for over 8 years for several projects including: Foundation for Sustainable Forestry, Trout water mapping in PA, Suitable Habitat for Cougar Reintroduction in PA; AZ forest fire burn assessments, and site analysis. Skills include: Geo-databases, spatial analysis, watershed delineation, topology, etc. Several projects have been published or used by state agencies. Author for several award winning applications and publications.

Rendering

Six years of expert digital 3D modeling and rendering. Award winning images have been featured in several publications (below) and are used by designers throughout the country. Programs fluent in include: Sketchup, V-Ray, Lumion, Revit, and SU Podium. Designs include commercial buildings, vehicles, and parts. Bring your ideas to life with photo-realistic renderings.

PORTFOLIO - FEATURED PROJECTS

Below are a few examples of projects and publications that I have completed.

ABOUT

University of Arizona: Masters of Landscape Architecture; Allegheny College: Biology and Environmental Science

My composition of professional skills span several areas of focus including art, design, and biology. This portfolio is divided between scientific research and graphic design work completed during my undergrad at Allegheny College, Pennsylvania, and my Master’s Degree at the University of Arizona. All of my work pertains in some way back to the three elements of art, design, and biology. My passion to combine biology with interpretive landscape design led me to the major of landscape architecture and I plan to continue my education while developing skills that will serve me in a professional career.

Design Process

  • 1. Site Analysis

After having received an assignment or met with the client site assessment begins. This may be in the form of photo essays of the site, measuring site dimensions, aerial ortho-imagery, drone aerial images, hydrological studies, topography, existing site features and plant inventories, circulation, sound studies, important viewsheds, etc.

  • 2. Conceptual Development

With the information gained from the site analysis, conceptual work begins with rough drawings on trace paper, bubble diagrams, relationship diagrams, and sketches highlighting proposed ideas for future synthesis. Case studies and precedents help to refine the concepts to clients. If time permits 2-3 rough concepts are refined into one highlighting the strongest features of each.

  • 3. AutoCAD and GIS

The final concept is brought into CAD or GIS, depending on the project scale, for precise measurements and development. Plans are further refined into construction or engineering documents. Planting plans with plant schedules, irrigation, electrical, lighting and details help to highlight the project's specifications to contractors, architects, engineers, and planners.

  • 4. Rendering

The next step of project refinement is to bring the AutoCAD or GIS documents into 3D modeling programs. SketchUp is used to create scaled 3D models for clients to visualize the proposed site before construction. When paired with post production software such as Lumion, the digital space becomes fully explorable via images, video fly-throughs, and 360 degree virtual reality.

AWARDS AND HONORS

Graduated top of class, a semester early with completion of master’s thesis – Latodami Environmental Education Center ReInvisioned. Featuring the redesign of a busy park section in Pittsburgh, PA, this thesis incorporates rich history with an in-depth literature review. Master planning and renders highlight improvement suggestions to address issues with habitat loss, connectivity, and accessibility.
